that was so unhelpful...I don't want to name the baby Masha, but want to known what the name means/originates from and to then see if there are other similar names we could use instead...please keep your rude comments to yourself

I found this on wiki:
In the Russian language, Masha (Маша) is a diminutive of Maria

My mother is named Masha Aaron after her grandfather... my grandma had a dream. Anyway, I always thought it was a derivative of Moshe.

It's a derivative of Miriam.

While it is an acceptable gender switch (my nephew Moshe is named for his grandmother Masha who was named for a Moshe), the actual etymology of the name is that Masha is a derivative of Miriam.

Well that takes away that possibility for me. I was thinking of naming after a moshe with the name masha if I had a girl but my husband's mother is Miriam so I can't use that name (we are not sephardi).

That is my name! I was named after my great-grandmother Malka Tauba. Of course since I was born in the USSR they Russified my name to Maria.
Yes, the Hebrew version is Miriam.

Miriam works...so does Malka. Thanks Imamothers! (now watch, I'll have a boy - and we already have a Moshe)

I don't know anything about sources and roots for the name Masha, but it is very much a name in our family! My sister is Mashy!
My father's a'h parents HY"D were Moshe and Masha; the townsfolk lovingly referred to them as 'Motzee Matzoh'.

I didn't realize it was fairly common. I always thought my mother was the only one as people always looked at me weird when I said her name was Masha Aaron. I never knew its connection to Miriam.
