“It is this that is demanded of each and every one of us of the seventh generation* – and “all those that are seventh are cherished”: although the fact that we are in the seventh generation is not the result of our own choosing and our own service, and indeed in certain way perhaps contrary to our will, nevertheless, “all those who are seventh are cherished.” We are now very near the approaching footsteps of Mashiach, indeed, we are at the conclusion of this period, and our spiritual task is to complete the process of drawing down the Shechinah (Divine Presence) – moreover, the essence of the Shechinah – within specifically our lowly world….

…And my revered father-in-law, the Rebbe (Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn), of blessed memory, who “bore the ailments and our pains” who was “anguished by our sins and ground down by our transgressions” just as he saw us in our affliction, so will he speedily in our times, redeem the sheep of his flock simultaneously both from the spiritual and physical exile, and uplift us to (a state where we shall be suffused with) rays of light…May we be privileged to see and meet with the Rebbe here in this world, in a physical body, in this earthly domain – and he will redeem us.”

-the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, Basi Le Gani 5711
translated by Rabbi Eliyahu Touger

*The Seventh Generation: The Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneersohn is the Seventh Lubavitcher Rebbe. His leadership represents the Seventh Generation of the Lubavitch movement.

This maamer, Basi Le Gani, was delivered on the first anniversary of the passing of the Previous Rebbe, Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn. It was on the first yahrzeit that Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn assumed the leadership of the Lubavitch movement.
