I have a friend who pursued this for quite some time. She was told they would need to be CY. I think eventually she did find some CY kefir grains and yogurt cultures from a company in Amsterdam, but the shipping made it ridiculously expensive (over $100).

I have wondered this, too.

I have not yet asked a shailah, but I heard of one person who was told that they could get regular kefir grains and "use" them over and over a certain number of times, throwing out the kefir produced, until what was left would be considered chalav yisroel grains.

Again ask you rav, but it might be possible.

would you consider buying c'y kefir and using that as a starter? commercial yogurt is a great starter for homemade yogurt, the cultures are alive and kicking...

I would like to understand what does it mean when you say cholov yisroel kefir. I received grains from someone who received it from someone in Israel (both frum women) so it's definately been used in cholov yisroel milk many times before I received it. I couldn't reach the first woman and the second didn't have info about where it's from (she didn't think there was a problem).

I want to have clarity about it. Anybody know? Or a name of a Rabbi who knows about kefir? We are very careful about cholov yisroel so I wanted to know the status of the kefir.

TIA

I am also interested in cholov yisroel kefir grains. Please let me know if you are successful... Regarding the kefir in the stores, I think you need to keep using it as a starter, whereas the grains are self-perpetuating.

I am not really sure how to answer you which is why I haven replied yet but I'll give it a go but please bear in mind that you need to ask your own shayla.

To make your own Kefir milk you add milk to the kefr grains and let it sit 24/48 hours, you then seperate the milk from the grains using a strainer and the milk you have left is the drink that you drink. you want to make sure that the ppl who gave you the kefir grains used chalav yisorel milk to prepare their own kefir grains with otherwise I would personally not use it would not be chalav ysroel.
I have no idea where you go your grains from and f they used chalav yisroel for the grains, you'd have to ask them. I dont have the number of a Rov either, sorry.

My SIL runs a healthfood store (in Jerusalem.... all the foods have good hechsherim) and I asked about kefir and what her husband told me was that there is a question about the origins of some of the enzymes used in kefir grains and that's why he couldn't find kefir they could import here with a reliable hechsher.

I have a magnet with their store info on my fridge!

You can call them at 1 700 553 700

Malky or Daniel (her DH) both speak English. I'm not sure about the other employees.
