It's hard to pick just one. I think Schuman to listen to, and Chopin to play.

To play: good old Beethoven and Bach for beauty, and Kabalevsky for fun!
Sometimes Beethoven's music surprises me with a very singable melody that sounds almost like a pop song.
I also like Chopin, Purcell, and others...
Oh, and when I was growing up, we used to have a magnetic pad of paper on the fridge that had music notes and... "Chopin Lizst"!

Debussy, Eric Satie, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Verdy
and don't forget Gilbert and Sullivan (do they count as classic music composers?)
A rather unknown but Italian Jewish composer Salomone Rossi has written beautiful pieces, including polyphonic kaddish and adon olam.
Thanks for starting the thread. I enjoy it very much.

Salomone Rossi is definitely not unknown!
G&S are wonderful, of course - not sure if they are classical, but they are classic.

I also forgot Grieg and Dvorak.
We are hearing a cello program of Ravel, Lalo, and Schumann in August with Yo Yo Ma, IYH, and very excited.

Right now I'm so obsessed with Pachelbel (canon) that I can't think of any other composers.

I'm so glad you know that Pachelbel is the composer....I went to a family wedding and they handed out favors or CDs with "favorite" music, and on it was "Mozart's Canon in D"....DH is a classical music expert, and it took a lot of coaching from me to help him keep his mouth shut.

That's so bizzarre, because most people refer to it as "Pachelbel's Cannon"!

I have never heard of Salomone Rossi. Thank you for telling me about him!
Glad to see Dvorak and Grieg on several people's lists.
