I think it is absurd.

Ikea is a privately-owned company. Why should they be held responsible for articles printed in Swedish newspapers? Of course the Swedish government wouldn't take action. The American government wouldn't either for the same reason of freedom of the press.

The problem is that the Swedish government refuses to even condemn the article (no one was asking them to jail the writer or fine the paper or anything like that.) A government can condemn or regret an article without impinging on freedom of the press - if it wants to.

In Sweden they feel that the government shouldn't meddle at all with the press at least not in a case like this. It was another issue with the Muhammad pictures. I think the point here is to see what kind of stuff the Swedes want to read. It says a lot about the country and I think Jews should read between the lines and get out of there now!

Wasn't it the swedish govt. that saved all the jews during ww2?

The Swedish government requested the J in Jewish passport so that they could stop them at the border. Furthermore the White Busses of Folke Bernadotte wer esent for Swedes and also took Jews with them. This doesn't make heroes like Raol Wallenberg any less important but Sweden as a country does have an anti-Semitic tradition. I wrote more about my own experiences of this on JewishTale today.

More on IKEA and their cooperation with the charedi sector in Israel here

And Bellariva, ignoring the question of "can a Nazi do teshuva", the "old Nazi" is dead and the company is owned by a foundation.

a while ago I asked my grandparents if they minded us buying a german made car.
their answer:
if your spending the money buy whats best
they have no problem with people buying a bmw or bosch appliances...
what offends them is when people buy german products to save a buck (as in ikea furniture)
its the opinion of only 2 holocaust survivors ( although I know several of their friends that subscribe to the same philosophy) but it works for me

I didn't know Bosch was German, it's become so di riguer. My Kitchenaid's still holding up after close to 15 years, bli ayin hara, and my daughter saw it worked so well for me that that's what she got when she was given a choice at a shower.
