I have a lot of oats and would love to make it into sweetened breakfast oatmeal that my kids may actually eat.
Can such a thing be done, does anyone have a recipe?

Thanks Smile

What type of oats do you have. The quick cooking say 1 minute or so. The old fashioned oats take about 5 minutes. Steel cut oatmeal takes 40 minutes on the stovetop.

I am currently using the old fashioned oats, follow the serving instructions, put in the microwave for 5 minutes. I then add all the additional stuff and its done.

I boil it with water and milk. milk makes it a bit sweet.
raisins, finely chopped apple, cinnamon, brown sugar...
mix and match dif things. it's filling, quite healthy and yum.

oats (not so much much instant oats) are healthier than most other cereals, and will usually keep u going for longer

I use the relatively-quick oats for most of my kids. I take 1/3 cup of oats to 1/2 cup water and add bit of salt. I nuke it for 1 or 2 minutes. My kids add brown sugar and they love it!

I use the long cooking oatmeal. Same measurements but I nuke it for 5 minutes and eat it with salt instead of sugar.

In the winter there's nothing like a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast!!!

Sometimes I take the cooked oatmeal; add an egg, sugar and cinnamon. Mix it up and make an oatmeal pancake. YUmmmmmmmmmmm.

Boil it like the directions with the salt recommended.

Per each 1 cup of oats (2 servings) I add:

1/3 cup fruit (raisins, craisins, diced apples, etc)
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg

then when serving a put 1-2 Tbsp of brown sugar or maple syrup on top of each person's bowl.

My kids wouldn't touch anything with raisins or lumps of any kind with a 10 foot pole!! You lucky moms who have kids that do...

My kids pick the raisins out.... Smile

And we use just the regular oats, and microwave. It's relatively cheap and they love it.

definitely depends on what kind of oats you have ... oatmeal is usually made from rolled oats so it's easier to cook ...

there was a thread somewhere where dainty diva and I discussed the varied oats ...

rolled oat looks flat. they cook much quicker, say 5min or so.
steel cut oat looks like individual grain. you don't have to soak it but you'll need loooong cooking.

Boil up milk, sugar, cinnamon, a little salt, and butter, and add oats. Cook over low flame, stirring most of the time. My kids like brown sugar sprinkled on top - in that case, add less sugar while cooking. Yummy!

It is the "quick oats".
I boiled it up for a couple of minutes, half a cup of oats to a cup of milk, added sugar, vanilla sugar and cin.
It was really good.
Thanks everyone!

I guess I am. My kids will only eat it with the raisins. But - we aren't eating raisins now - so I subsitute craisins. Maybe they are just not old enough to know better yet. Smile
