I normally make with chopped nutty chews or fresh strawberries.
I wanted with strawberries this week, but the strawberries in the store were not good-looking!
Should I do chopped nutty chews, or strawberry piefilling or both?
Also, I normally do it with choc. whipped cream as well, but it sort of flopped & can't find anymore topping in store. So I think I'm leaving that part out.
BTW, I'm making it for a family we'll be going to tomorrow.

u got my vote for the strawberry pie filling.
I think it will lighten up the dessert the way nutty chews can not. but perhaps sprinkle some on top? also do u know that there r no nut alergies at the home ull be visiting.
also it will look nice.
im not a huge fan of cherry pie filling
liquor is not substantial enough to consider it another component. also perhaps theres an issue of serving that to children as its not being cooked.
this does sound like a delicious trifle though.
how do u make custard?

Ice cream
I ruined a chocolate cake a little while back (it fell apart when I flipped it from the dish), so I put it in a trifle dish with chocolate ganache and cream cheese frosting. It was sooooo delicious.

Gluttony is also a sin. Use fresh fruit like strawberries.

I've done choc cake, cherry pie filling & whipped cream (2x each layer) or I've done the cookies & cream trifle in KBD.

the results are so even at the moment.
I think I'll follow Solo's idea. I'll do strawberry pie filling in the middle witht he layers, and then sprinkle some nutty chews on top.
Cherries (in my opinion) are only good when fresh - no pie filling.
I'm an anti-drinker. I don't like the taste of alcohol, coffee, tea, mocha.
Thanks for the suggestions.
Do you think I can put it together now? Or should I do it tomorrow b4 meal? I know she'll save it to serve when I'm there, and I'm afraid it may go soggy overnight. What do you think? (I need to bring the trifle {or everything needed for it} before shabbos.

I always put mine together before Shabbos. I don't think it should be a problem.
Enjoy.

What! People use chocolate cake for trifle instead of vanilla sponge???
Quelle horreur! Is this the same dish as our beloved pud?
Here the bottom fruit is either strawberry or raspberry, fresh/frozen and sometimes with jelly/jell-o. It's always vanilla sponge spread with raspberry jam and soaked with sherry Then custard (Alpro soya custard is the parve option) and whipped cream, with toasted almond slivers.
Don't let the british trifle police catch you...

ok. I won't make it when I come to UK.
Or if I do, I'll swear my MIL to secrecy.

This is the type of trifle we have in Australia too (though my mother always used port instead of sherry). The chocolate stuff sounds good but doesn't sound like trifle...

Yup. Good ol' Bird's custard is still on LBD kosher list. Instand or ready to serve one is dairy (nonCY), custard powder is parve.

Tsk tsk! You people don't know how to make a proper trifle. From the bottom of the bowl & working our way up....
Sponge cake soaked in cherry liqueur.
canned fruit (drained)
jello (cherry or strawberry works best) left to set
Bird's custard mixed as per instructions left to set
fresh whipped cream or that plastic shpritz stuff if you're desperate
sprinkles (or as the Brits call them 100's & 1000's.)
Using chocolate cake is an attack on all that's holy on the altar of culinary perfection.
Now THAT is a trifle! Oooh, I hope my mummy makes me one when I get there. She already promised me Yorkshire Pudding. Heaven!!

My MIL makes Yorkshire Pudding! delicious with gravy!
I tried making it here in the US. I got baked pancakes. Yuck!
The Bird's custard - DH swore by it! But we brought some back, and it didn't really taste too good when I made it.
I think I'm better off making american stuff.

Yalt, it's the flour here. Even plain is different from the English stuff.
