My cell phone goes through the motions of charging. but when taken off the charger reverts to having only one square (there are three when fully charged). I just left it for a number of hours on the charger, saw that it was fully charged (three squares) , took it off, and suddenly there was only one! Yesterday it was the same, but after ten minutes of charging in the car on the special car charger, or 15, it managed to have two full squares! What's going on?

you probably need a new battery. every so often they just have no life left, so you need to bget a new one.
or go to the cell phone store and have them check it out.

Yup.
I've replaced cell phone batteries on ebay. Don't bother going to a cell phone store--you'll pay quadruple the price.

if it is charging on the car charger maybe your regular charger is faulty.

My thought as well. You could take it to the cell phone store and ask them to charge it for you, as a test. Just don't buy a new charger there. Chargers, like batteries, can be purchased after-market, from ebay or even amazon, for a small percentage of what you're charged at the cell phone store. I think I paid less than $5 for a spare charger for DS.
