And where did you buy it?
My DD is almost ready to be moved out of her crib, and I'd rather not spend money on a toddler bed, only to have to buy a twin bed soon after. I shopped around a little and I found that a twin bed + boxspring went for about $400 but with delivery and tax came out to about $550 (and the frame is just a metal frame with wheels, which I would have to replace). I thought this was a bit pricey. How much did others spend?

$500 for a twin+boxspring+mattress didn't buy anything near "the best" even 7 years ago, the last time we bought twin beds in the U.S. So $550 seems to be in line with a pretty standard-quality mattress.
Have you tried the online stores? 1-800 numbers (I think I remember 1-800-mattress or something like that)? There is always room to bargain. Don't take their first offer. You may want to call a place in North (South?) Carolina, the furniture mecca (check online) and see if they have better offerings.

I think it was around $250, but the first bed that I bought was a bunk bed that can be two separate beds. It's a metal one. A friend of mines dh sold furniture, so I got a good deal. It also came with the mattresses.

DD1 got a twin mattress/boxspring for about $300.
DD2 got the toddler bed that my parents bought for DD1 to use at their house.
