My five year old has a lot of behavioral issues. We did a psycho-educational and speech evaluations. She has speech-language, auditory processing and sensory issues and will start a special school next year. At the evaluations, they stated her slight focusing issues are due to her speech delays. I'm not comfortable with these diagnostics as I feel there is something more going on. Her behavior, focus, tuning-out, inability to remember and follow through on simple tasks tell me it's more then just her speech delays. I was thinking of having her evaluated by a professional, not BOE (I'm in NY). but not sure who or what type. would it be a child psychiatrist? Some kind of behavior specialist?Neurological something? Please help me figure this out!! I'm dreading Monday as weekdays have become such a huge nightmare of conflict between me and her.

Speech delay can encompass auditory processing, which impacts ability to process and follow directions.
Try a neuropsych eval, and/or an evaluation from a developmental pediatrician. But either one probably needs to be scheduled months ahead of time.
In the meantime, if you describe what your challenges are, maybe we can offer some home ideas to help a bit.

I agree - a developmental pediatrician will test the whole child.
You can also do neruopsych testing, but having done both, the former is much more important and informative.
And, yes, while sometimes it takes months to get an appointment, I asked to be put on a list in case anyone cancelled. We were brought in 2 months early (granted, they called me the morning of, but it was worth not having to wait 2 extra months to deal with it all).

How do I find a developmental pediatrician? Is that sort of thing covered by insurance? Would I need a referral- from who?
