DD is 4 weeks old and exclusively formula fed. Sometimes feedings go well, but other times the milk just streams out of the sides of her mouth as she's sucking. Her chin and neck get covered in milk! Any advice? Is this normal? We are using avent classic bottles with stage 1 newborn nipples.

Is it possible that those times she's either too tired or not hungry anymore so just not swallowing?

We had this issue as well and the nipple was too big and coming out to fast for her to handle. When she was starving she kept up with the flow but otherwise it just made a mess. We switched to Playtex slow flow it really does come out much slower and she was able to handle it much better. We did try once at 5 months with a regular nipple and had the same issue, but that could be that she got used to the slow flow.

It's possible that sometimes she's too tired/not hungry enough, but it seems to be a problem even when she is wide awake and very hungry. Also, the nipples we are using are extra slow flow, but maybe we just need to switch brands? Amother, why did you choose playtex? Is it a shorter nipple? I wonder if that would help.
