It just occured to me that the silver plated glass covers would protect from flying glass. That's great! Around how much do they cost? BUT, is this something else that will need polishing?

Nach, I polished maybe once a year, for the fun of it. they really do not tarnish.
They are $10 for 4, at SaveRite.

Just FYI: We asked a Rav about putting water in the glasses before putting the candle in, and we were told it was not allowed, since you are causing the candle to be extinguished, as opposed to letting it go out alone.
I really like the idea of the oil. I can't see that being a problem. Anyways, I stopped buying the cheap candles, and only buy Neronim, and I find that I don't have any wax left at the end. The only problem is getting the little metal piece out. I wonder if the oil will help with that.

I was talking with some friends today about how they s/t crack. We think it's when they aren't in perfectly straight then the flame could lean up against the glass.my dh pos out the metal piece with a scewdriver.

I just use a small spoon to get the little metal piece out. It comes right out of the glass cup.

With oil, the little metal piece literally slides out.
