Good Luck! I strongly suggest taking one of those one week review courses. Do they still offer them, I do remember that is was very expensive.

I've been an RN now for almost 25 years, had the most amazing jobs, both in the US and Israel. Still working full time, worked through all my kids, supporting a family and loving my work.

Get a job doing something you love. You don't need to do a year of med-surg in a hospital for experience if you don't want that.

These are the salaries in large cities, teaching hospitals. I happen to work in Boston. I have friends that work in NYC and make the same, if not more. My base salary is 58$/hr. Then add above that weekend, holiday, overtime (time and a half), evening, night or whatever differential. I used to have a weekend package when my kids were small, worked 16hrs/week, two 8 hours shifts, every Saturday and Sunday night from 11 pm to 7 am. Never paid for babysitters. The weekend package pays double time (YES, double time) if you agree to work every weekend.
Do the math. Nursing is a great field to consider. It is also an occupation that you can take with you.
