I get to max out my personal credit card every month, plus a certain amount of cash available in my bank account for my use.
I try to stick to that number, although I don't always succeed. I need to consciously keep track of my spending in order to keep within the budget.

shop with cash or a debit card that only has a certain amount on it. if I want to buy more than I planned I have to get to the bank etc. I can think twice is it a good deal do I like the item? etc. I try to figure what a good price for certain items, so it helps me plan how much I will spend in the future

I use the old-fashioned envelope system (putting money into different labeled envelopes) and try to purchase only with cash. If I don't have the money, I don't spend it.

I do this electronically. I use youneedabudget.com which has you virtually put money into catagories/envelopes and I then only spend what I actually have. I do use a credit card (for rewards) but only if I actually have cash in the bank to pay for it (not just if I will have cash by the time its due)

Write down all expenses. Divide what to buy when accd to when I get pay check.
Pay cash from envelopes for certain things and anything else predecided on debit card if I don't have cash.
No credit card.

I use YouNeedABudget with mixed results. You always need to be on top of YNAB- consistently updating it and checking it. We found that we weren't amazing in this area... It's much easier to just keep spending on credit cards until you're maxed out, and then feel guilty...
YNAB needs a "budget meeting" every time you get a paycheck, so you can allocate the money (see a previous post). I read a tip about making budget meeting night special in some way, so you look forward to it and don't skip it. We've started implementing this, and I hope it continues to work. Staying on budget is work for us, but is also pretty rewarding.
