I'm not sure whether this is because of household smells or because smells of a plastic bag or what but when I pull out a "clean" blanket from it's storage bag or sometimes I use a pull string trash bag to store a single quilt, the blanket reeks. It is not a describable smell but it certainly is not pleasant.

I don't think my house necessarily smells so I can't imagine the blankets are really picking up a house smell. I like my to keep my house tidy but nobodies house smells to the occupant. My house is by no means spotless.

So is this because I need to store blankets in a different way?

You can try storing them with a nice scent dryer sheet throw in.
Any items stored long term in a closed bag will smell less than fresh when opened.

I fold my spare blankets and keep them in a closet without a bag. The smell is the same as my other linen.
