I squeeze them out after washing dishes and leave them on the counter or in the clean sink to dry. I don't understand why they get smelly so fast. whole sink area will smell of mold just because of a small sponge.
what am I doing wrong?

Sponges get moldy and smelly really fast. They need replacing every 2 weeks - I guess in the summer heat that's every week.

I don't use sponges at all...

I don't use the disposable cheap ones. these aren't meant to toss every week.

I use a new sponge every da or two.

I buy the washable ones. I wash them and dry them on the hottest setting to kill all the germs. Its worth toinvest in the washable kind.

I have the "magic" ones. They come in three colors.

You can try heating the sponge in the microwave for a minute and see if it kills the smell. Only microwave a sponge when it's WET, never dry.

I use bounty paper towel instead of sponges. Does the job and usually don't need more than 1-2 a day and then into the garbage they go. No issue with germ buildup and dirty/smelly
Sponges sitting around!!

I use the ones that look like this (cant find the actual picture online)

http://www.aliexpress.com/item.....2HmZM

they are thicker and color coated to be meat, dairy and pareve. buy then in kosher supermarket. guessing they are a jewish brand.

is there a reason why they get smelly? or is that just natural? I don't recall this happening in the past, just recently.

sponges need to be replaced frequently. You can try throwing them in the washing machine (or dishwasher, if you have one) to try and extend them, but a week is pretty normal.
