My dh recently wanted to purchase perfume for me in the Duty Free. After he decided which one he liked, the salesman tried to dissuade him from buying it, telling him "it's out of fashion".
Does in or out of fashion really exist with perfume?
I understand clothes, shoes, glasses, accessories... but perfume?
Are you able to smell s/o elses perfume and know which one she is wearing?
Just curious Very Happy

I'm sometimes able to smell a perfume on a person and tell what it is.
the type of scents I wear are not fashion dependent in my opinion.

They are lovely and not recognizable
Just the way I like it
my own unique scent Smile
(in other words, I don't like smelling like other people Wink )

I think that's silly. It's up to the person as to what they like!

how ridiculous. I mean im sure there are the new perfumes that everyone wants and are in all the fashion magazines, but to dissuade someone from buying a perfume saying its out of fashion???? perfumes are scents. if u like them u like them. maybe he shouldnt be working in such an unfashionable duty free?

He's a salesman, he probably was told to push certain items.

However, you always want to wear something age-appropriate. You don't want to wear something like Red Door and smell like an old lady.

if people are willing to go with fashion, designers would be silly not to make money on it...

often yes. I collect perfumes and I have a great "nose" for them.

not necessarily fashionable ... but I think seasonable ... some have a more musky winter wear ... while others are light and flowery fragrant ... to dance in a fields of lavender ...

there are "fashions" in everything, from colors of facial tissue to jewelry to music to art to laundry detergent. "Fashion" is nothing more than an invention of the industry to artifically stimulate sales. Were it not for changing fashions, most people would do the sensible thing and buy new things only when the ones they already have are used up, worn out, or lost.

Those who can think for themselves buy what they like and to heck with mass marketing. Those who cannot, become slaves to "fashion". Of course the salesman was told to push the new "fashionable" fragrance--the old favorites practically sell themselves, and anything new has to recoup all the costs of research and development before it even begins to show a profit.

As for recognizing fragrances, people with good noses who interest themselves in these things can easily identify the fragrance being worn. Can't you instantly identify, eyes closed, coffee, chocolate, peanut butter, Crayola crayons, roses, carnations, buttered popcorn and pizza? Perfume is not so very different. I can often identify fragrances but struggle with the actual names--just as I recognize faces but struggle with the names. "Yes, yes, I know what that is...I had it a few years ago...it's amber-colored and comes in a frosted bottle with a silver cap...something with a G--no an R...it's....oh, I give up. " "It's Lauren by Ralph Lauren" "There you go, just as I said, I knew it was something with an R."

Mima, your dh sounds like a sensible guy and you are a lucky woman.
