... we received a second hand American doll for my kids. Being that my daughter already has one, my six year old son instantly started playing with that one...dressing her and naming her... my kids went into Lala land together with their dolls. On one hand I thought it was cute to see that side of him and to see the siblings playing so beautifully together, but I'm also not sure if I should let him know that dolls are for girls. My husband already said he will tell him that dolls are for girls.
Something just doesn't sound fair about not letting a child play with a toy just because it's "girlish"
I'd love to hear other opinions on what you would do

Not a big deal. Just let him play. He won't be playing with dolls when he's older so why make a fuss about it? If anything, making him feel bad about it will cause more damage than him playing with a girl toy.

There are no girl or boy toys nor are there girl or boy colors. There are just children's toys and something we call colors.

Ukrainians do not let boys play with dolls and girls play with guns.
I personally think there is nothing wrong if they plays with it. But I don't think I would go out and buy a doll for a boy.

When it comes to child play it's good to have dolls so they can Express their feelings like as in play therapy.

My Mother was Ukrainian, I had a gun, my brothers were allowed to play with dolls, none liked guns and when we all got older we liked working on cars together.
Broad brushes aren't always the most accurate.

Because only girls are allowed to be nurturing.
If you give little boys dolls they'll grow up to be gay.

Shoot me now, I did it. I went and bought my son a doll. He loves it. That and all his kitchen toys.
That being said, I wouldn't go out and buy any child any child a $100 doll. Regardless of gender.

I purposely bought a doll for my son. Nothing wrong with it at all. Leave him alone.
And as far as tznius goes, that's nonsense. I don't think the dolls have an anatomically correct parts anyway.

Seems to me this is a shalom bayis issue rather than a parenting issue, because op wants to let him be, but her dh disagrees and wants to tell him they are just for girls.
Other, wiser people than me could answer this different question.

Dolls are not just for girls.
Let the kids play.
