I've grown up in BP and I went to school there all my years. My class was a mix of girls from Chassidish and non- Chassidish homes. If I can single out one difference between the two- The girls from the Chasidishe background, WHILE THIS DOESN'T APPLY TO ALL, are much more likely to use the term Meshuginner to describe others that aren't like them, as oposed to the girls of non-Chassidish background using the term nuts or crazy which is a similar word. This applies to their husbands equally. Chassidish males also seem to relish classifying others as Meshuga.
Why is that?
They seem to gain pleasure by calling others Meshuga! I am basing this on years and many relationships with many different types of frum people.

It sounds as if the word is used as a colloquialism rather than as as serious term.

OP, it seems like you answered your own question in your post.
Meshugenah is like calling someone crazy or nuts. It's not like you really think the person is crazy, it's just a silly term that people throw around.

I also grew up in a school with mixed chassidish girls and others. I prefer the word meshiginah over " you F---ing whatever" Those nice words I learned from the non chassidish girls. (and plenty other words)

This post made my night. I'm cracking up.
I should really write "Yes, we do get pleasure out of it." LOL

Maybe yiddish has less derogatary terms for people than other languages, so there is less choice.
(although there are certainly worse things you could call someone in yiddish!)

I am chasidish myseld and never realized that chasidim call people meshigene.
btw I went to a litvishe seminary and there were a few chasidishe girls there, noone made a diference between us, and girls didn't even know who is chasidish and who not.

Don't forget how isolated some chasidim are, and how conmformity is stressed by them.

OP, what's your underlying issue with chassidiam? Therapy to handle that might be in order.
