Some non-Jewish weddings cost more than Jewish ones do and for really odd stuff. My husband brought home a wedding invitation from work, in which 2 doctors (male and female) who have been dating for 10 years are inviting their friends to fly down to Mexico and vacation there (each at their own expense) and be present at the wedding. They call these things destination weddings and non jews spend plenty on them.

Its a huge business in the secular world. There is tons and tons of marketing convince people that they need to do this for thier weddings. I have a relative that is planning her wedding and goes every weekend for the last few months to wedding hall expos with catering and photograhers etc

Did you read the article?
They wanted to have a cake of both the bride and groom, but they didn't give the bakery enough time to do both. I assume that, since it was her "dream", they did hers alone.
