Do it anyway.
Hide them. Scissors should never be left unattended EVER.
My 4 year old cut my just before upsherenish boy's bangs just before his upsherenish and before we had time to take pictures, so his pre-upsherenish pictures, he has a comb over.
She also cut her own hair earlier than that so I have a cute picture of her with her gorgeous curly hair, and a major chunk out of her bangs.
That's life!
Payos are not good, though. However, they do grow.
