I need some advice.

My living room furniture is dark brown with cream upholstery. The walls are cream and the floor is a dark (lighter than furniture) parquet. The couch is dark brown (like the furniture) and I want to get a rug.

I'm thinking that maybe this would be the perfect time to bring another color into the room. What color rug should I go with? And then I'll match throw pillows to the rug...

I love the way a teal pillow brightens up a room, if you can find a brown/teal/tan rug that would be perfect.

Maybe something like this https://www.homedepot.com/p/Sa.....42227 (first one that came up when I googled, have no idea if it's a good one)

Oooh, that's a lot of shades of brown. The good news, is that you have a solid neutral base to start with.

When doing interior design, always start with the rug, because that is the hardest thing to match. Finding a rug that matches your walls, accent pillows, and wall art is a lot harder, than having a foundation and building up - so you are smart to do it this way.

Do you want to go modern, or classic? Persian rug, or something more trendy?

If you want to go classic, get a Persian rug that has burgundy and forest green in it.

If you want trendy, get something with burnt orange and avocado green.

Whatever you choose, I'd suggest buying everything from the same store. They often have complimentary colorways, and the same dye batches. It helps keep things from very subtly clashing. With all of your accent pieces in one place, it's easier to visualize how you will incorporate each piece.

If you are in the US, I love Cost Plus and Pier 1 stores. They are eclectic, affordable, and really fun. There's always Ikea, and if you are on the east coast there is Conran's as well.

I wish I could come over and help you decorate!

Brown and teal, and brown and pink, while pretty - are very 5 years ago. I think you'll get tired of it fairly quickly.

Sorry, I just noticed that you said living/DINING room. Are the rooms contingent? Does the colorway need to flow?

If so, look at your dishes.
If they have a particular color or pattern, that can inspire the rest of the house. If your dishes are modern and teal, then of course get a brown and teal rug, and disregard what I wrote above.

If your dishes are traditional, and have a burgundy and gold rim, then you'll want a Persian rug that echos those colors.

Then you can feel completely pulled together, and have a very professionally done look.

Thank you FranticFrummie! You're making me think Smile

It's one long room, with the dining room table at one end, and the couch at the other. The rug would be in front of the couch.
The dishes and tablecloth are a gold and cream idea. Pretty traditional, I think. Tablecloth is a gold on cream paisley kind of look.

I'm in NJ.

Something like this?
