I hear. However, those who don't eat machpud (most of the ashkenazi people in my yeshivish/charedi circles don't) unfortunately don't have any cheaper options than paying close to double that for a kilo. I'm not referring to badatz, that costs even more. That's the prices for kehilos (which not everyone eats either, though we do), and possibly rubin/shearis (though these could often cost higher than that as well.)
