How can we get 30 y.o. DD with psychological issues on programs in NYC? Which organizations in Brooklyn best help with this?

30 y.o. DD has had psychological/behavioral issues from elementary school, that we hoped would improve, but sadly they did not. After on again/off again long term therapy with highly recommended therapists, she feels unable to be gainfully employed, and we see that as the truth. Were at a point where we realize she will not be financially independent any time soon, outside of a miracle.

Who can help us get her the funding appropriate for now and to prepare her for support after our lifetime?

Weve heard we need a recent diagnosis (weve had diagnosis many years ago), and then an organization like Ohel will help.

Where do we begin?

Is Ohel in Brooklyn, best for this? Can anyone recommend who in Brooklyn, in Ohel or elsewhere, we can go to for help?

Ohel seems like your best best. Start with them and if they can't help you they will refer you elsewhere. Good luck!

I work in hamaspik and deal with these cases a lot. Do you live in Brooklyn? Please be aware that ohel is the only Jewish agency that has housing for the adult mental health clients.
If she has written proof of a diagnosed developmental delay before the age of 21 she can try to apply for Opwdd services. If not she can probably be eligible for an adult care manager through our adult mental health department (integrated health) and therapy through our clinic (sipuk clinic). She should also be eligible for Medicaid, food stamps and ssi.

At this point were not looking for housing, but wed want that as a possibility for further down the line.

She was never diagnosed with any "developmental delay" but she was diagnosed with many psychological conditions, since age 10. We may not have records though.

Who is the best to advise us on what coverage is available for her? Where do we begin?

Whats the difference between what Hamaspik does and what Ohel does? Would we contact both Ohel and Hamaspik, with these circumstances?

Thanks!

Why not call both and hear what they each offer?!

Also try Women's League, Met Council, and COJO.

They help with getting food stamps, medicaid, HUD, and Welfare.

You should look into government paid housing for your DD - to make sure she is taken care of
before your get too old.

It can take 10 years or more to get into a group home. Or your DD may be eligible to have
government cover the rent and send her aids to help with cooking and cleaning.
