Title says it all. What is PANS/PANDAS? How is it diagnosed, and by whom? How is it treated? How can it affect ADHD and ODD? Is there anyone in the Five Towns area (NOT Brooklyn) who deals with this?

Pandas and pans are basically terms for a set of disorders where the immune system mistakenly attacks specific parts of the brain instead of attacking and fighting a bacteria or virus. The immune attack causes inflammation in the brain, which causes that part to malfunction, which presents as a whole slew of behaviors.
I have 2 kids on the p/p spectrum.
1st presented with:
Insomnia
Phobia and fears around bedtime
Regressive behaviors like baby talk, thumb sucking, crawling, wanting to be picked up and fed and held
Stuttering
Facial grimace
Twitchy feet
Restless legs
Compulsive jumping, skipping, hopping, climbing
Akathisia (compulsion to move around all the time)
Clapping and tapping during eating
Sliding off chairs when sitting
Food restrictions
Meltdowns
Aggression
Separation anxiety
Ocd but not at all classic and hard to pinpoint at first like fairness ocd, time ocd, not missing school of missing the bus ocd, repeating questions, perfectionism, intrusive thoughts, obsessions
Demand avoidance
Oppositional and defiant behavior
Compulsive skin picking and nail biting
2nd presented:
Wetting accidents
Barking/screaming tic
Throwing things compulsively
Meltdowns
Not letting foods touch each other ocd
Aggression
Food pickiness
Throat clearing tic
Compulsive nail biting
Compulsive eyebrow picking
Adjusting yarmulka and pulling up pants tic
Scratching hands/cuticles/face tic or ocd
I pretty much self diagnosed both of them. We got confirmation from a pandas specialist later on. We have been treating for years using diet, herbs, supplements, antibiotics, homeopathy, Craniosacral therapy. We’ve seen a lot of healing and have a way to go.
I’m not sure but what you mean with how it can affect adhd and odd but I’m of the belief that both of those disorders are merely descriptions of a set of symptoms and are really rooted in biological causes like pans, pandas or similar, under the umbrella of brain inflammation. It’s incredibly how closely linked the brain and behavior is. Until today many of the behaviors that look so much like a child’s personality simply melt away with antibiotics or supplements.
Dr. Vivian Denise in your area is great for treating this spectrum of disorders.

Same….I’m wondering if that’s the underlying cause of my 15 year old’s ADHD….

Dr. Denise isn’t far from me and I would consider. Can you tell me about her? Does she take insurance? Will she hear me out that something is making me suspect pans/pandas but I can’t put my finger on it? Is she thorough? Know lag able and trustworthy?.
