But we do eat fish with cheese.
Come to think of it, I wonder why cheese is okay if milk is not. |
I think it has to do with the terminology, that it says "chalav" and some pasken that to mean literally milk, while others interpret it as dairy in general.
I used to work in a Chabad environment, and one day we had a bagel lunch together. I myself am plain Ashkenazi, but I was sitting with 3 chabad women, and we got into a discussion about eating fish and dairy together, as there was tuna, cream cheese, etc put out. All 3 women held differently. One didn't eat fish with any dairy, one could eat them so long as they weren't cooked together, and the third held it was only milk, and fish and other dairy is fine.
So even amongst those who hold of this, there's a lot of variation

I have a chassidish friend, she does have fish and milk but they eat tuna melts, so you're not the only one.

I am not sfardi (actually pretty heimish) but my aunt and uncle (who is a big Syrian rav actually) and all their Syrian kids do not eat fish and dairy together |
lol so my husband said all sfardim are very makpid about this and I thought maybe a number of sfardim aren’t makpid.
