We are a current homeschooling family considering Aliyah. Initially, I thought I’d put my kids in formal school in Israel (cost is a huge issue for us here in the US), but the more I learn about the system and boxes, the less I like that idea.
I know it’s legally possible to homeschool is Israel. Have any Olim done it? How did your kids learn Hebrew? Were they still able to make friends and integrate socially?

It will make it hard for them to get the exposure they need to really learn Hebrew. If you go this route, make sure to enroll them in various chugim, both for the Hebrew exposure and the afternoon activities.
At some point you or your children will have to decide where they fit in. Army, sherut leumi, neither? University? Are you able to teach up to bagrut level, which they will need for University? What level of kodesh are you teaching? They will need to be on a par with their peers to be accepted to yeshivas or midrashot later on.

We did it but we ourselves speak Hebrew fluently.
In general the Ministry of Education will give you a very very hard time, even refuse outright to approve you, if they feel your children won't learn Hebrew, or if you yourselves do not speak Hebrew. So a lot of olim do have problems getting approval.
It also depends on district. Some districts are stricter than others when it comes to approving homeschool families.

I don't do this, but I considered it. There is a facebook group, something like Homeschooling In Israel.
From what I understood, it reallt depends on your town/city. Some give you h3ll and make it almost impossible, others you just submit some papers and that's it.
