I want to make stuffed cabbage to surprise my father, who grew up with his mother's Hungarian cooking. What are good "heim-ish" side dishes?

I also would've suggested rice, but since stuffed cabbage has rice, I think it would be overkill. How about green beans? If the stuffed cabbage is only rice, you can make mini meatballs.

I do the same. Stuffed cabbage is heavy so I like to serve it with mashed potatoes which is not heavy and eat it together with the sauce of the stuffed cabbage.
