Anyone have advice about how to wash/ treat these stains? Also, how to avoid them? Maybe specific deodorants don't cause them? Thanks

Correct. We never buy white deodorants or anti perspirants anymore, only the clear ones.
If you have stains, pour some white vinegar on the affected area and let sit. Wash on hot. If shirts have gone through the dryer, you're probably toast and burned toasted, at that.

There is such a thing as underarm protectors you can wear, but I find them icky and uncomfortable.

Kleinerts underarm shields. You can get used to wearing it. It is meant to be worn over the bra but I find it a lot more comfortable under the bra as it's kept tightly in place.
