Please clue me in... Everyone at work is talking about nerdy salad bowls, a big faux pas at sheva brochas, what do they mean

I have no idea.
I clicked on this thread because I read the title and thought, "how can a salad bowl be nerdy???"
- Does it have thick horn-rimmed eyeglasses held together with a band-aid? Does it come with a pocket-protector?
- Are there mathematical formulas scribbed on the outside?
- Is the salad itself nerdy?
The suspense is killing me.

Maybe they mean disposable ones? The ones that 'look like crystal'?
Or maybe a style that is no longer 'acceptable' to them.

We are obviously not the in crowd. Wish I had time to get my kids to figure out how to take a picture of a large striped square melamine bowl I got at KMart on clearance for a dollar some years ago.

Wow... everyone's a critic.
Maybe someone got bowls from party store with 'mazal tov' in cartoon letters or a caricature of a bride and groom. Or maybe someone's aunt/cousin/12-year-old sister is an aspiring crafter and glued beads and silk flowers onto all the bowls..... or wrote the couples' names in glitter puffy paint. That's what comes to mind for me.... but if someone is serving tasty salad, I will take some in any kind of bowl.

I'm baffled.
Plain boring round salad bowls, as opposed to square ones or the type on stems?

If *anything* can be cool and trendy, then the same thing can be nerdy.
Most of the time, I think people only talk about clothes as being nerdy. (like reeealy high-wasted pants with a narrow leg)
You can have nerdy curtains in your house.... nerdy tablecloths, nerdy placemats, nerdy cars in your driveway...

The world is really changing fast...plastics and dishes can now be "nerdy"!

DS mentioned to me that he doesn't have any nice serving bowls and didn't get any for wedding gifts, so I offered him 2 from my massive stock. He returned one to me saying that his DW said it was nerdy.

LOL. Can I have it? We also don't have any serving/salad bowls yet.
K, ours are probably pretty nerdy - I usually bring the salad to the table in a plastic mixing bowl. I guess it's a good thing we don't have guests...

My salads come to the table either in a soup bowl from my dishes set (corelle no shabbos fancy china) or in my big salad patterned bowl.
No guests have complained yet...

Nerdy to me would be the opposite of funky. It appears everyone can define "nerdy" and then choose how to use the term...
