What do you do to get your kids to clean up their toys?

At that age, I would expect to have to supervise them. "Yanky, you put the books on the shelf." "Shira, you put the blocks in this container." Give lots and lots of praise and feedback. Make it a game. "Who can put 10 toys away the fastest?" Etc.

If they refuse, flat refuse, then I would get a big bag and say, very nicely, "Okay, if we can't clean up the toys, we can't have the out to play with." Bag up the toys and put them on a high shelf. They have to earn them back by being helpful when it is clean up time. One of two things will happen: they will clean up, or there won't be anything to clean up because it will all be bagged up.

Get out the garbage can.

Set the timer, and tell them that anything that is not put back in it's proper place is going to get thrown away. Since they don't care enough to take good care of their things, they won't care if it gets thrown away, right? Besides, there are lots of boys and girls out there who don't have any toys, and they would be happy to give Mr. Monkey and Dolly Boo-boo a new home.

There will be disbelief, followed by hysterical tears, followed by rapid room cleaning. This may need to be repeated a few time for the message to sink in that you actually will do this (so make sure that you really will follow through - don't cave in!)

Years down the road, all you'll have to do to get them to clean up, is to mention the garbage can. They'll get to work right away if they believe you.

Instead of the trash can, I suggest the "tzedaka carton for the gemach."
