A few years ago, I made the mistake of using contact paper on the shelves on my fridge, and since then I have sticky stuff on them that will not come off. All the dirt sticks to it and my fridge looks filthy all the time. We are moving soon and I am willing to do anything just to get it clean.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Really - that is the last thing I would think to try. Isn't that really toxic, though?

Nail polish remover is acetone. Chaval though to use the brand name stuff if you don't have to. In Israel we can get straight generic acetone that's very cheap. I've used it many times to get rid of sticky residue.

I love Goo Gone. It doesn't smell as much as acetone by far, which is important when working in enclosed spaces like a fridge.

make sure the fridge is not cold because that will make it harder to come off ...
nail polish remover is diluted acetone - so acetone is stronger & cheaper and makes more sense ... goo gone is also wonderful if you don't care to spend the monies
also use a straight edge for scraping off sticky residue and/or a nylon scrubbie pad [the cheap ones at the dollar store work just fine]
