NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A London man who claimed he was assaulted in a possible “knockout” attack while in Brooklyn for a wedding has since said the attack never happened.
The 65-year-old man recanted his story and said he was never attacked, police told CBS 2.
It was not immediately learned how the man emerged bloody after the alleged attack, as was documented in a published photo. Police did not indicate whether they would go after him on possible charges of filing a false report.
The news site JP Updates said the man “may have just fallen and banged his face on the concrete pavement,” and that the man was on his way back to the U.K. once it was learned he had recanted his story.
The man had claimed he was attacked on McDonald Avenue near 18th Avenue in Borough Park, Brooklyn, as he left the wedding around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday.
He claimed the attackers grabbed him by the head and threw him to the ground, and no property was taken.
New York City Councilman David Greenfield (D-44th) told 1010 WINS’ Sonia Rincon Tuesday that the assault as reported appeared to be a knockout attack.
“He was attacked from behind by two individuals, brutally attacked,” Greenfield said. “They did not take anything from him, and he was in such bad condition that he had to be hospitalized.”
A wave of attacks, where the perpetrator attempts to knock out an unsuspecting stranger with a single blow, began in Crown Heights in October of last year. Police previously beefed up patrols in some of the communities that have seen several incidents.

Why would someone report a knockout attack that never happened, or recant the knockout attack, if it really did happen?

Im trying to be melamed zchus, and thinking of hundreds of reasons he had to say it was a knockout attack, after getting beaten up while during the week of his grandchild's Sheva Brochos, but people who do things like that (who change their stories that have already hit the news, and who clearly lie in one of their conflicting accounts of their news story) , give outsiders more reason to hate and mock us, as in this and many similar comments all over the news.

He makes a report, the police say its a bias crime, he recants and now is on a plane back to England ? Anybody else would be charged with a false claim .They make me sick !!!!!

My guess is he was in fact attacked, but decided to recant because if he pressed charges he'd be tied up forever in the legal system, and he just wanted to go home, preferably on time, and recuperate in the comfort of his own home. The man was a guest from another country, here for a wedding. What, he's going to hang around for a few weeks waiting to see if they catch the perp, then hang around until the case comes to trial, if it ever does?

I guess he didn't know he could just refuse to press charges and didn't have to recant the whole story.

Another possibility is that he is confused and doesn't quite remember what happened. The man is not young, and he fell or was hit on the head. At some point he may have recalled the attack, and at a later point his memory may have faded. It may be that he davka recanted because he didn't want to be choshed biksherim and wouldn't press if he wasn't 100% clear in his mind as to what happened.

Or it may be that he had a ministroke or the like, and when he came to, couldn't remember what happened, but assumed he'd been attacked because that was the only thing he could think of that would land him on the ground and bleeding with no memory of how he got there.

Why assume the man was a malicious prankster? We have zero evidence to suggest such a thing.

I totally hope youre right. Although if he has any health issues that might have caused confusion, it would have been nice for a family member (he has family members here, the grandchild's wedding was here)/acquaintance to speak up and say so to the press. Im sure the press is looking to speak to family members for any explanation they might have. People in the news business would be thrilled to have updated details!
