We are eating out the day meals by my in-laws. I am wondering what to do for the night meals, being that the night meals are pretty late. What do people do for night meals with kids? I want to eat by my in-laws the first night meal but shavuos starts so late. Do people just eat at home on both shavuos nights?

Wherever there is a guest eating out, there is also a host eating in. YES, some people just stay home. Even 2 meals. Even ALL meals.

I guess you should do what's good for you and your kids.
I prefer to either stay at home or invite people over. That way the kids go to bed when they need to.

As for some suggestions, our children usually eat late afternoon so the only thing they eat are really just Kiddush, hamotzi and desserts. Can your hosts be accommodating? (I hope so if it's OP's in-laws). We've been invited out where kids fell asleep on the sofa, or one of the parent left early (though admit this is not ideal), once one of the children of our guest ended up sleeping over.

As much as it's hard being out for late summer evening meals, to be honest I don't cherish the thoughts of having to clean up after dinners at close to midnight.
