The name seems common among old Jewish American males. What does it mean? It is unheard of in my country. Is this eye-rah or ee-rah ?
I am intrigued.

Eye-ra.
Its my uncle's second name.

Why not check it on the sites you seem to frequent so much?

Supposedly derived from Hebrew Yira (dictionary: watchful) but anyone ever heard of anyone named Yira in hebrew?

Just be careful if you name a child that and live anywhere near England or Ireland, because you'd be spelling the name I-R-A, which means more than the name eye-rah!!!

Happened to a relative of mine.

It's an "uncle" name. Lots of people have an "Uncle Ira". Like Max, or Milton or Phil.
Seriously, it's just an American English name that was popular in the 30s, 40s,and 50s.

In Latin, it means anger Twisted Evil

But I doubt Yidden were thinking of the Latin when they name their kids that.

I'm wondering why this is posted under baby names. When I think of Ira I think of someone who is at least 60 years old! Very Happy

(And su7kids, I believe the IRA have pretty much disbanded. The british Army left Northen Ireland a couple of weeks ago. It is no longer a war zone (officially).)

Can you imagine naming a kid Gerald Phillip?

That's my father's name!!! BH he goes by his Hebrew name - Simcha!

My grandfather was Geoffrey. I was shocked as a kid to hear that the Toys r Us mascot had the same name!

The pendulum swings this way, and then it swings back. Martha was most fashionable in Mrs. Custis Washington's day, and it's ba-a-a-a-ck. To me a Martha will always be dumpy, frumpy, middle-aged and grey, but tell that to fans of pop singer Martha Wainwright.

Quaint Biblical names are back big time in the nonJewish world. I would like to believe that this reflects a yearning to go back to old-fashioned Biblical values, but the stores, the headlines and the movies tell me otherwise.
