I feel like I said something stupid today.

Was talking to someone on the phone and they said thank you to me for something. They said they were impressed by my behaviour.

I said "you don't have to thank me!"

it just rolled off my tongue.

Honestly I don't think I would give it a second thought.

Let it go.

You're overthinking it. But I have said stupid things and worried myself over them. This isn't one of them !

How is "you don't have to thank me" different from the classic "don't mention it"?

Your listener wasn't thinking that you're giving her a lesson in etiquette; she understood that you were being self-depreciating (not self-deprecating, which is a very bad thing), which is considered a mark of modesty, humility and politeness.

To answer your question, I wouldn't "feel" anything. You uttered a polite formula that was not to be taken literally.

I don't understand the issue ... did you feel you needed to respond to her compliment and left it out ?

either way - don't think too much ... "you can think & think & think till your brain is numb"
