It's a mistake multiplied numerous times. I recently read that Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach said that 2 pieces of chicken; one white meat and one dark meat are different minim in terms of shalach manos (he said that since they are different in terms of borer on Shabbos than they are different minim here too).
