I want to write thin lettering on cookies and Im looking for a frosting thats easy to make that hardens.

I usually use vanilla extract, water, and confectioners sugar. I add the sugar until it is the stiffest it can be while still pouring out of a bag. Once you get an idea of how it should feel while mixing, it's very easy.

I'll second the royal icing suggestion, but the most helpful thing I've learned about lettering for cookies that squirt bottles make it *so* much easier than piping bags. At least for those as non-talented as I am...

Royal Icing
5 tablespoons meringue powder
1 cup water
2.25 pounds confectioners sugar
Mix meringue powder and water for 20 seconds. Add confectioners sugar. Beat on low for 8-10 minutes until stiff.
