My sister and I used to read the word "en-ki-klopedia", until our older sister told us how to pronounce encyclopedia. But that was when we were really young

My dh made fun of me the other day when I prounounced the toilet paper as "Char-min." He said it's "Shar-min." I think he may be right, but I read it more often than I hear it.
OH and how is it possible to pronounce "idea" with an R at the end????
My boss always says "pacific" for the word specific- drives me nuts!

What about least? Someone was trying to tell me that he wanted to renew his apartment lease. "The least, the least," he kept saying.
What about "indicted?"

I mispronounced the word lapel - (rhymed it with label) a few years back in front of my father.
My dad got a huge kick out of it, and till this day tells my dh about it.
It's correctly pronounced as lah-pel.
but how was I supposed to know that?!

Are you saying that because of the Cars movie? "Holy Porschia!" I was under the belief that it was pronounced "porsh".

But I bet it doesn't have pronounciation for names of actresses.
there are sooo many actresses whose name Id love to know how to pronounce,
like chloe sevigny. I always pronoucned it sevignee, but then on the dvd bonus features I heard it was sevinay

It's a phonological phenomenon called "r-insertion".
It has nothing to do with mispronouncing.

I've always wondered how to pronounce lchan stadium.
first of all is it an L (el) or an I (eye)?
secondly, do you say Lechan,, ch as in challos, or lechan, ch as in charm?
or is it Ichan.
actually I just decided to google Lcahn stadium and they asked me if I meant Icahn stadium, so that answers my eye and el confusion, but I still don't know how to pronounce it, Ichan, ch as in itch, or icahn as in eyecan?
My x had one word he would say very wrongly, and it drove me absolutely nuts, of course I never corrected him.
the word is a yiddish word, the english definition is try/try out. like I'll try to reach him.
the word in yiddish is probiren פראבירן. but he would pronounce it fabiren פאבירען.
there are prob. a million more words I dont know how to pronounce, some of them were asked here so now I know. but I can't think of any more at the moment..
good thread idea..

I have friends with the last name Elefant-pronounced like the animal. But some people are afraid of insulting the Elefants by calling them elephant, that they pronounce their name Elefont.
