okay I got a confession

when I say "twelve" & "twenty" it comes out with a ch so it's "chwelve"

and when I say "that you" it comes out "thatchoo"

About "misled" -- I also pronounced it my-sld when I was a kid. My sister and I still pronounce it that way just as a joke. We also say "poth-older" for potholder... and things like that...

I say 40 as forry.
In 3rd grade I got 1 word wrong on the spelling test. I spelled it like the teacher said... "chray."
Apparently, the right answer was "tray."

When I was in 2nd grade, a lot of people misspelled "robot" -- the teacher clearly said: "Robut. Robut."

On the other hand, when I was in 10th grade, I had a wonderful English teacher who made sure we got our spelling words right. When he gave a test, he would say, "Atten-DANCE. Atten-DANCE."

Seemed like cheating at the time but to this day I always remember how to spell attendance!!

Oh, and about chray/tray -- I can't say TRAY. It always comes out chray. Also chree. (You know, those things that grow from the ground, with a chrunk and leaves?)

actually, if you search for "define word_you_want_to_hear_pronounced" (ie: define ethereal) on the yahoo search engine and click on the first link, it will display the definition with a little pic of a megaphone- click on the pic to hear the word's pronounciation
Now that we are talking about odd English names, what about Freha? How do you pronounce that one?
When I was younger I didnt know that Geoffrey and Jeffrey were pronounced the same way.
What about Van Heusen? I say it Van Hugh- sen, correct?
ROFL, a Freha in Hebrew is a "loose girl". Frai-cha in Hebrew... never saw it in English.

Van Hoo-sen.

Leutenant (or however you spell it) is LEF-tenenat in British English!

And how about Colonel? You pronounce it KERnel!!!! How did "L" turn into "R"???

I have had trouble with some words since I left the US after 5th grade, before my vocabulary was mature. I still sometimes say things in a "funny" way, and find that ladies my age who made Aliya around when I did have the same issues....

My father, for some reason, pronounced Pennsylvania: Pennslavania. Maybe that is 30s Brooklynese?

And I say In-ter-es-ting, but was told to say in-tres-ting? Which is correct?

eether or Eyether is acceptable, though peenalized is the preferred form.

a lot of the discussions here involve accent
robot as robut may make sense for some but for others..huh?
for example

some pronounce hot as hot (english, australian) and some pronouce hot as hut. (Nykers)
and you may all laugh at each other but it just boils down to accent

anonymous because I don't live in a hut in the summer 8)

LOL

Reminds me of when I order Perrier in a restaraunt as a teenager.

(I rhymed it with Merrier) The waiter was trying not to smile and then it dawned on me, Oh! It's French....Perr-I-ay.)

embarrassed

So, happy to hear about debris with an 's' and depot with a 't'.
