Freilich, are you talking about something in particular? There are some things that have no use unless completely done and if you try and don't finish then you have wasted your time. In that case, trying is useless without completion. Other times, the more you try the more you gain. Not sure what you mean here.

NOT ALWAYS.
Sometimes, the more effort you put in, the more you lose.
go ahead Mommy912, there's a riddle for YOU.
but I'll admit it isn't too difficult. I'm not as experienced with riddles as you are.

Also in pregnancy, it's hard to be pregnant and you lose your mind (see threads... )

I think it is more like when a person is pregnant and they are cleaning and cooking and doing and they just can't anymore they have really tried their best to finish up but it is just not possible. or if you have riddle that is and you worked on it for a long time you can say the same thing I have really tried or tried my best but still am stumped. I don't think if you put your mind to it you will succeed.

it's more than just putting one's mind to it. It means thinking ahead and making a plan IN ORDER that you'll succeed.
regarding a riddle- I agree, at a certain point, you really just can't.
Ever saw that special ed. video (can't recall the name.... maybe 'waves?') where you watch a teacher conducting a class to a normal intelligent audience, but in a way that are able to enter the heads of special needs children and experience what they go through on a day to day basis.
an illustrated example from the video:
teacher calls on child to answer question.
kid doesn't know answer, and can't figure it out.
teacher keeps repeating to student- "think harder, think harder"
WHAT DO YOU MEAN- THINK HARDER!!!!!!
