Thanks to our wonderful president, everything has gotten out of hand expensive, we're paying an astronomical amount of taxes, and it's becoming harder to live like this. People are telling us that we should get a legal divorce, so me and the kids can qualify for government programs. I cannot imagine doing that, the thought is making me so uneasy. But it is after all legal and they're saying that there are no ramifications to this. I hear that this is becoming quite common to do.
So, have you done it? Is it worth it?

Op, no advice but just here to tell you I understand.
Dh and I make bh a good living (around 300k) and don't have a penny extra after the bills are paid. Prices are so sky high it's really scary.

We aren't legally married for whatever reasons and we pay joint taxes, it falls on the household, marriage doesn't matter. If you live in the same house and raise the kids together it won't work. Do you plan on getting two houses and living separate lives?

You can’t file for benefits etc as one who has no partner support though etc when you share the household. Even if you aren’t married. (I mean, you can try but if it’s discovered, it would be very problematic.)
Also fyi these benefits are most accessible in particularly blue states, thanks to Dems including Biden.
So it’s a package deal…

It would, you are misinformed. No one cares about the legal document. You won't get any benefits from a divorce only on paper.

I was in the hospital with a crazy woman who had 5 under 5. The social workers asked if she’s married. She answered she’s separated. “who helps you care for the kids? My husband comes home at night to help (and make babies) lol.
To answer op. Do what you have to do.

Thousands of couples are legally divorced and live together. It's not illegal.

It's illegal to apply for benefits claiming that he is not part of the household if he actually is. Whether or not you're married on paper.
