We are desperate for books for my son... while he might be only 9 he has read everything he can get his hands on. He is BH super smart and a high level reader.
The school told us to look at their library and it was all too easy- Hardy Boys, boxcar kids...

I think these are great, but don't know if they'll meet OP "clean" standards. My DDs' school recently eliminated all their Ramona books Sad

My 8 year old is really enjoying mysterious Benedict
Society. It is hundreds of pages. Is that the type of book you are looking for?

A lot of the books by Andrew Clements might be good reading for him
Just read each one first to check you are comfortable with it, I think there was one I didn't want my kids to read, the one about a boy and girl in different countries who were penpals.
Frindle is probably the best kids book I ever read

I don't know, nobody asked my opinion. Could be like Bubby said, mentions of things like Halloween and Easter and Xmas. Or maybe they don't like what they consider bad middos, some people censor for characters with chutzpah, etc. Maybe there was some potty humor? I think in one of the Fudge books, someone pees in a plant, and that was considered a problem.

Judy Blume wrote books that included s_xual relationships between teens and also wrote relatively pareve books for younger kids. I'm sure nobody was suggesting her novel Forever, but Fudge is a reasonable suggestion.

I read the first book in the Benedict series. It was really a creepy story. I guess ok for kids who won't get creeped out.

My son around that age loves the wings of fire series. I think all are pretty clean except number 13. Yes, there is murder and violence, but since its about dragons I feel like the kids realize it's just fantasy so don't get really scared...

The Indian in the Cupboard series by Lynn Reid Banks was a favorite when I was a kid. Haven't read in years, double check for cleanliness.

I also loved The Black Stallion series by Walter Farley. Haven't read in years, double check for cleanliness.

The "I Survived" series by Lauren Tarshis- these are excellent. I censored them for my kids and removed some mild boy/girl interactions with white out, but almost perfectly clean. The one about Pompeii has lots of talk about Roman gods so you may want to either skip that one or censor heavily if you're buying it.

I also agree about the Ruach Ami series by Avner Gold- they revamped the books and added chapters to the earlier ones. They are excellent!

Would he enjoy the Maggid books by R' Pesach Krohn?

I would have thought hardy boys was about that age level. Remember it doesn't have to challenge him that he struggles over words, but rather that he will enjoy the story line. My ds actually loves non-fiction and I get out a lot of different books. I do check them more thoroughly that there's nothing in them that's questionable, and there's some great jewish ones as well.
We've got a lot of the Enid Blyton series as well. I'm not in the US so I don't know what's available and also what your standards are. DS has enjoyed Angie Sage's septimus heap series, Charlie bone series, Artimus Fowl series and joseph delaney's spook's apprentice (they did a movie of it). There's a couple of websites that will tell you the details of books and what might be inappropriate, but I can't remember the names just now.
