Our previous accountant charged $250 for both DH and I (not legally married). He retired. We called another accountant recommended by a friend who quoted $350 for each of us individually - so $700 total. Is this normal pricing? It seems like a lot

Ours is $350 for a simple return. So makes sense that it would be double for 2.

Mine charges around 300-500 for a basic return.
married filling jointly. We have a house and one w2. Maybe filling separate makes it do pricey. I think it's a little to much .

I'm on a Whatsapp group of accountants and there was a discussion recently re pricing. Most of them agreed that even for a simple return they wouldn't charge under $300 because there are always questions or issues that come up during the year (where's my refund? I'm having a baby, will that increase my refund? If I buy a car what can I deduct? Etc etc) and you can't charge separately for each little question so they inflate the initial price quote to cover the time it takes to deal with all the little issues.

$350 is average pricing I think. Side note, I’m curious why you’re not legally married.

I just file online myself.

How long do you think it takes your accountant to do your tax return? If it's more than an hour, including answering your questions etc...than why is $350 a lot? People pay that for 45 min of therapy on a weekly basis with no guaranteed outcome. At least here you know your taxes are done correctly

Your account at is not making any money on you. Or he’s paying his staff below min wage.

My firm charges $350 min for one return. If your return is really so easy do it yourself on turbo tax. If it’s too complicated for that then that’s why you have to pay!

How much do you expect to pay? Your account at is a professional with a masters degree or years of experience.

We didn’t do it when we got married (we both kind of forgot about it) then we lived in Israel for a bit so we weren’t able to take care of it. When we moved back, we tried twice to plan it around our anniversary but because of Covid they changed the rules of witnesses (you have to pre-register them instead of picking a stranger off the street) and we didn’t have relatives available to come down to the office during business hours. We had a hard time finding a rav willing to “officiate” after the fact.

Then I had my baby who has ongoing medical issues and it’s more worthwhile benefits-wise if we’re not married
