Also, check from strep. Untreated strep can cause a mess.

I would really strongly encourage her to speak to a therapist.
That would be the first thing I would do rather then go on medication.

Sudden onset of depression is concerning and I would suggest a full physical work up to rule out any physical reasons for this.

Thank you. You are all so kind.

From reviewing all this, here are my thoughts:

Review her labwork, specifically check if Dr tested her thyroid levels, strep titers, Lyme.

She is part of an excercise class, but she's disinterested right now. I am careful not to push her too hard, so that's that.

Re, the root canal, I would love to hear more about this. Any informative links? Thanks.

We have a close, trusting relationship. Also, I 'get' this kid very well. We've talked about her sadness, and I don't believe there is an external cause. It really appears to be chemical/ hormonal.

I would like to look into this more carefully, get a second opinion. What specialist am I looking for Can? Can anyone recommend an intuitive, sensitive dr ?

theres a more thorough thyroid panel that can be done by the endocrynologist. also check for epsteins barr or mono as well as lyme and diabetes. all those things can cause lack of energy and depression

Absolutely check for a physical cause first.
And don’t be swayed by other suggestions even from professionals.
Speaking from experience in which I unfortunately didn’t insist on an MRI strongly enough.

Failed root canals can be asymptomatic and cause all kinds of mental health issues because of their proximity to the brain and how the trigeminal nerves connect with the brain stem.

In addition to Lyme, strep, long covid, thyroid, hormonal imbalances etc.

If your ped can't help further, I'd take her to see a functional MD.

I'm not any good at this. But this also jumped at me. Infections in the mouth can spread to the brain. I would check that tooth

Google how a root canal can affect the brain.

My sister had uncannily similar symptoms down to the tears flowing and medication prescribed by a local practitioner.

She did bloodwork and everything came back fine

She tested for Strep and thyroid, and everything was OK.

She Connected with Sury Sprei and went on a raw food diet. She changed completely! She is back to her confident and bubbly self.

Start with vitamins- the B family, magnesium, omega 3, and a d vitamin. She should take it religiously every day.

To those suggesting an mri- what is it for? What could they find there?

Where are you located? Dr. Lapides in Lakewood is exactly the bolded, and particularly attuned should this be a mental health concern.

My ds had this this year, for a week or two he would just start feeling sad, and tears would roll down his face. He couldn't explain to me why he was crying, just felt very sad. We attributed it to that he was sick the week before, guessing covid which probably threw his system out of wack. He's totally back to himself, lasted maybe 2-3 weeks. It's been a few months since and he's his regular self.

I think you should see someone else first to rule out medical causes before seeing Dr. Lapidus. He may be helpful if you're treating this as a mental health issue.

I do think you should get that root canal checked out first before anything else.

Not sure if you're in a position to spend money. Dr. Fratellone in NYC might be a good person to look at the big picture. I don't think he takes insurance.

MRI can rule out brain tumor which can cause depression. Check out root canal first.
