Zip Up The Parka
Tune = Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah
© 2006 by Don Halley

Zip up the parka, zip up the boots
My oh my we all need our snowsuits
Plenty of sunshine out there today
Groundhogs see shadows, winter will stay

Mister groundhog sees his shadow
For six weeks, here's the thing
We'll just have to wait for spring

Zip up the parka, winter will stay
What a cold feeling, what a cold day

The Old Groundhoggie Home
Tune = My Old Kentucky Home
© 2004 by Don Halley

The sun shines bright on the old groundhoggie home
'Tis winter, 'twill be here to stay
For six more weeks does the shadow forecast gloom
While the springtime will be kept at bay
For six more weeks we'll be wearing heavy boots
Our coats will be bundled up tight
Oh six more weeks till we see the tender shoots
So the old groundhoggie home, good night

Chorus: Sleep some more, Groundhoggie
Oh sleep some more I say
For the next six weeks in the old groundhoggie home
In the old groundhoggie home, drift away

Here Comes The Sunshine
Tune = You Are My Sunshine
© 2001 by Don Halley

Here comes the sunshine, that wintry sunshine
I see my shadow, now I must go
If you'll excuse me, I'm very sleepy
Wake me up in six weeks or so

Wintertime
Tune = Clementine
© 1996 by Don Halley

In a tree trunk with a chipmunk
Hibernating for a time
There's a groundhog who's the top dog
On this day in wintertime

Oh my groundhog, oh my groundhog
Oh my groundhog, so sublime
Is it frost and cold forever?
Are we stuck in wintertime?

Dawn appears on the horizon
Out of bed he starts to climb
Tis the day to find a way to
Check the length of wintertime

Oh my groundhog, oh my groundhog
Oh my groundhog, so sublime
Is it frost and cold forever?
Are we stuck in wintertime?

Of forecasters he's a master
He performs his craft so fine
Shadows mean no early spring so
Best get used to wintertime

Oh my groundhog, oh my groundhog
Oh my groundhog, so sublime
Is it frost and cold forever?
Are we stuck in wintertime?

Punxsutawney
Tune = Oh Susanna!
© 1995 by Don Halley

Oh I come from Alabama
With water on the knee
I'm going to Pennsylvania
A groundhog for to see
It rained all night the day I left
The weather it was warm
But up north I ran into
Bone-chilling winter storm

Punxsutawney
Have mercy on me
For I come from Alabama
With water on the knee

Mister Groundhog
Tune = Mister Sandman

Mister Groundhog bring me a spring
Make it the soonest that I've ever seen
Please don't have your shadow seen
Mister Groundhog bring me a spring

Don't be ridiculous. A treif animal's shadow can't be kosher.

Not to mention how ridiculous it is to be celebrating a non jewish holiday! You should be proud of your Yiddishkeit and not feel like you need to stoop to observing these ridiculous non jewish "holidays"!!!

HOW can you say it's a secular meaningless holiday when it clearly leads to SPRING, which we all know abounds with pagan symbols of fertility, and WHO KNOWS! Groundhogs could be a pagan symbol of the end of winter! And maybe it was a groundhog that left a dead mouse on my doorstep the other day! I bet it was a pagan offering or something. Ugh, disgusting.

Holy Moses! Groundhog Day has to do with Yoshke's mother going to the mikvah!

http://wilstar.com/holidays/grndhog.htm

It stems from the ancient belief that hibernating creatures were able to predict the arrival of springtime by their emergence.

The German immigrants known as Pennsylvania Dutch brought the tradition to America in the 18th century. They had once regarded the badger as the winter-spring barometer. But the job was reassigned to the groundhog after importing their Candlemas traditions to the U.S. Candlemas commemorates the ritual purification of Mary, 40 days after the birth of Yoshke.

Candlemas is one of the four "cross-quarters" of the year, occurring half way between the first day of winter and the first day of spring. Traditionally, it was believed that if Candlemas was sunny, the remaining six weeks of winter would be stormy and cold. But if it rained or snowed on Candlemas, the rest of the winter would be mild. If an animal "sees its shadow," it must be sunny, so more wintry weather is predicted:

Well, that settles it. Jews should NOT observe Groundhog Day.

Could a moderator lock this thread please?

Naaah!

It took me all of 22 minutes to complete a board fight from start to finish.

And that included research!

And I saved everyone else from having to expend the energy.

My little mitzvah for the day.
