growing up, we never had dessert at the seder b/c my parents told us that we had to have room for the afikomun. I thought that that was a universal thing, but now I am seeing that it is not.

so, im juts curious, do you have dessert at the seder or not?

Traditionally, it was applesauce, stewed pears and compote.

Sometimes stewed cherries if they were in season...

The cakes and Bartons were saved for during the day.

As a kid we had compote
Today I serve fruit or maybe cake depends on what's around. Most people don't want anyhow as they are full.

same here... compote. But at that point, those who are makpid on eating the afikoman before chatzos are in a rush and don't have time for it, and those who are still eating their meals are generally too full for it.

my parents always made homemade applesauce topped with a few stewed prunes. To help the digestive track get a move on things...

I am feeling deprived. We never had dessert; our parents said that the afikomen would be our desert!

Yes of course we had dessert - I never knew that compote was so popular! I've only had it a couple of times in my life.

My MIL makes dessert because she feels it's not YT like without it. It's usually ice cream or fruit compote (or both).

Yep. I can't remember whether or not my mother did, but I imagine she did. Probably Pechter's sponge cake.

OMG, Barton's was a pesach tradition! as a kid we had to go around the neighborhood selling barton's for pesach to raise money for the school. Are they still around? Their chocolate almond kisses and Viennese crunch were the best! (By now they probably cost $3 a piece. That's one piece.)
