Sounds awful, but I recently read this story about a woman who was sentenced to death in prison, was then raped by someone at the prison, and has been spared the death sentence because of her pregnancy:

Foreign criminal justice systems are notorious for stiff sentences. As awful as it is for the brother of the bochur in Japan to imagine him imprisoned at all, compared to what's going on out there, is sentence isn't considered stiff.
Let's all teach our children, as best we can, about the world and why we need to be extra-careful.

On the one hand it sounds awful... on the other hand, I wish prisons in Israel were more like that, so we'd have people trying NOT to go there instead of Arab teens deliberately getting themselves locked up...
This story is a lot more positive than others I've seen on the conditions in Japan -- they let the bachurim have sefarim and learn, they let them have matza for Pesach, extradition to Israel is not only an option but considered fairly likely... etc. Which isn't to say it's good -- just better than it sounded in previous versions of the story.
