We aasked our Rov about using garlic, ginger, etc on Peseach and he said that if your mother never used it then that is what we should do. So I guess we will not be using it this year.

When I was a kid, we used EVERYTHING on Pesach. We didn't know that peanuts were legumes, and used p.b. onour matza even.
the rov woudlnever dare say "do you what your mother did" to me; we hardly knew anylthing!

Dont be so hard on yourself SaraG - in England we used Peanut Oil and peanuts too. It had a hecche=sher fro London Beit Din
I only heard about not using peanuts when we got here - it is minhag Eretz Yisrael. So maybe your mother was not so ignorant
Lots of Yekkim will use "mei kitniot " - the kitniot derivatives - such as oil.
In fact our rav has a hard time finding a source for NOT using them, even tholugh most people here do not do so.

No garlic?! For a whole week?! I would never survive. I put garlic on EVERYTHING. The boys from the yeshivah next door joke that there is even garlic in my challah. There isn't, but I do put garlic cloves in other breads and I am known in these parts for my famous garlic matzah balls. I've made garlic soup, garlic jam, we even eat garlic straight. I have several garlic cookbooks.
By the way, there is also such a thing as Garlic Pepper. It's great as a seasoning on steaks.
Maybe I'm a little too zealous with my garlic, but we all have our quirks.
