it's our state's capital; there must be tons of things to do there and nearby.

there's a state museum and some other museums around including in schenectady and up in saratoga. There's also some small sports teams if you like to go to games and don't want to break the bank.
There's also "outdoorsy" stuff, but that might not be appropriate right now. (Today it didn't get out of the teens.)
There are a variety of historic sites in the general region, especially those in relation to the revolutionary war, or even before.
FYI no restaurants, but a BIG kosher section, bakery, deli/meat counter, etc in 1 location of a major grocery store. There are two shacharis minyanim , and one minchah/maariv minyan during the week (2 on shabbos, yomim tovim).
Here's a place to start:

yes
NYS museum is free (donations welcome) They have a kids room, a sesame section, a real subway car, a merry go round, and many exhibits that catch kids attention . They are closed on sunday. http://www.nysm.nysed.gov/
about an hour from here is howe cavern, which is loads of fun.
There is a childrens museum in troy http://www.cmost.org/
There are 2 malls, one with a kids play area.
Depending on the season and weather, there is also trips to the USS slater, the aquaducks paddle boat ride, many nature walks, berry or apple picking, a lot of nice parks.
When are you thinking of coming? let me know and I can help you plan your trip

Ruchel, that's Albania, not Albany. Albany is the capital of New York State.

Can someone please advise on Revolutionary War sites near Albany or general historic/political sites, especially ones that can be seen/toured on a Sunday. (I am thinking of doing a Friday through Monday trip, maybe spending Shabbos in Tannersville). Also, does anyone know if the planetarium is open on Sunday?
